Students already possessing wheel throwing and/or handbuilding skills can create works for the unique traditional firing methods of Raku and Obvara. These surface-focused atmospheric firings create beautiful, purely decorative pieces by quenching red-hot wares in burnables or yeast-laden water. Learn about Raku and Obvara and how to make the best of these firing techniques, and have the opportunity to participate directly in these exciting firing methods as part of the course. Please note, this course will not cover basics of working in clay, and is not suitable for complete beginners.
Requirements: Have taken a 5-or-10-week Beginning Pottery class, or proficiency with basic skills on the wheel (centering, throwing small to medium forms, trimming, handles and attachments), or confidence in handbuilding skills.
Included in class fee:
- First bag of clay
- All firing fees for work created in ALL classes are included in the class fee (size limit- items must not measure more than 20” in any direction)
- Access to work in studio outside of class meeting time
- Access outside of class time will be restricted to business hours when other classes and programs are not in session in the classroom, and additional monitored times. Your instructor will orient you on how to reserve open studio access on the first day of class.
We ask that students comply with all of our health and safety guidelines. A student waiver will be issued during the first class meeting with the most up-to-date guidance.
Class is limited to 10 students max.
