Requirements: fundamental pottery skills in either handbuilding or throwing
Do you feel like you know how to make, but are unsure of what to make? Interested in livening up the surfaces of your hand-built or thrown ceramic work? Yve will introduce a myriad of simple and effective exercises and surface decoration techniques (including sgraffito, inlay techniques, water etching using wax resist and shellac, paper stencils and transfers) to help hone in on what you want from your pots. Focusing on iterations, multiples, and introducing the principles of design, we will explore the qualities that make your work fun to make, functional, and aesthetically consistent. Students will come away from this ten-week course with several new techniques that can be used on low, mid and high fire clay bodies, as well as receive guidance on the balance between surface and form to make work that feels uniquely yours.
We suggest you have basic experience with clay so you can focus on how to apply these exciting new techniques to ceramic forms that you are interested in making.
Included in class fee:
- First bag of clay
- All firing fees for work created in ALL classes are included in the class fee (size limit- items must not measure more than 20” in any direction)
- Access to work in studio outside of class meeting time
- Access outside of class time will be restricted to business hours when other classes and programs are not in session in the classroom, and additional monitored times. Your instructor will orient you on how to reserve open studio access on the first day of class.
We ask that students comply with all of our health and safety guidelines. A student waiver will be issued during the first class meeting with the most up-to-date guidance.
Class is limited to 10 students max.
